February 17, 2024 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release

Throughout the 2023-24 season, Winterhawks.com will feature monthly recaps of the organization's efforts to connect with and support the greater Portland community, as well as a look ahead at what's to come. Hockey is officially here, and we're proud to be a year-round staple of the Rose City and can't wait to see you all at an upcoming event!

First Tee-Greater Portland - Veterans Memorial Coliseum Visit and Skate with the Team

We got to hang out with our friends at First Tee again, this time at our place! Twenty-five First Tee kids came to the rink for a tour and to skate with the team! This opportunity allowed the students to see their favorite players and to try hockey for free. Thank you to the students and teachers at First Tee for visiting. We appreciate our partnership so much!

Tom's Tykes

We partnered with our amazing partners at the Boys and Girls Club-Portland to complete and host our second Tom's Tykes program of this season. This program allows children the amazing opportunity to try hockey for FREE for the first time. Tom's Tykes provides hockey equipment, ice time and coaching to kids looking to experience the thrill of our great sport. Thank you to our friends at Toyota for their support of Tom's Tykes!

ABOUT TOM GUSTAFSON: Tom, father of Winterhawks Associate Coach Kyle Gustafson, was the president of the Portland Amateur Hockey Association and was responsible for the youth hockey league which would become the Portland Jr. Winterhawks. After Tom's passing in 2019, Tom's Tykes was established in his honor to help introduce the great game of hockey to Portland-area kids at no cost to them or their families.

Learn more about the Tom's Tykes program here.

Kids' Day-

The Winterhawks hosted their second annual Kid's Day in partnership with The Boys and Girls Club of Portland. These kids had the opportunity to read starting line-ups, be involved in-game, shadow staff members, and see what it's like to work in Sports. Kid's Day was a huge success!

A huge thank-you to our supporting community groups First Tee, Skyhawks Sports Academy, OMSI, and the Oregon Zoo. We appreciate all of your support!

Oak Grove Elementary visit-

On January 22nd, the staff and team for the Portland Winterhawks visited Oak Grove Elementary for the final time this season. The team helped out with Math, Reading, and of course recess.

Thank you to Oak Grove Elementary for being amazing hosts!

Portland Winterhawks x Sunset High School Cram The Stands-

It was a successful Hawks Fight Cancer game this past weekend. The Hawks scored big on the ice and in the community. One group the Winterhawks partnered with was Sunset High School's annual "Cram The Stands" fundraiser. Cram the Stands is a Pediatric Cancer Research Fundraiser put on by Sunset High School. Through Sponsorships, T-shirt sales, and Donations, they raise money for one lucky ambassador each year. Every year they work together with Doernbecher to find a young patient to be our Cram The Stands Ambassador. This year the Winrehrawks visited Sunset High School during their fundraising basketball game and presented a check of 5,000 in hopes of helping Benjamin in his fight.
