Stanick Completes the Comeback to Help Raiders Win 4-3 in Lethbridge

February 17, 2024 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Prince Albert Raiders News Release

When it seemed like they were down and out in the third period, the Prince Albert Raiders did anything and everything they could to come out of Lethbridge with two points. Trailing 3-0 in the third period, the Raiders came back to tie the game late, as Turner McMillen tied things up with four seconds left in regulation, while Sloan Stanick scored the game winner just 17 seconds into overtime, as the green and gold took down the Hurricanes 4-3 on Saturday night.

After Max Hildebrand made a couple of big saves early in the game, the Hurricanes scored the first goal of the game with 5:56 left in the first. After Hayden Pakkala dangled around a Prince Albert defenceman in the corner, the former Raider threw a blind pass to the front of the net. There to meet it in the crease was Trae Wilke, who redirected a shot home past Hildebrand, who got a piece but not all of the shot. Wilke's ninth goal of the season gave Lethbridge a 1-0 lead in the later stages of the opening frame.

Things got a little hot with 2:49 left in the first, as Terrell Goldsmith and Joe Arntsen dropped the gloves at center ice. The two measured each other up for a few seconds before grappling with each other. Goldsmith landed a couple of solid blows before getting Arntsen's helmet off. The two tangled for a while after, landing a couple more shots on each other before they would be separated by the linesmen.

The buzzer sounded to end the first, as Wilke's marker was the only one in the opening 20 minutes, giving the Hurricanes a 1-0 lead heading into the second period.

Lethbridge took a 2-0 lead with 14:35 left in the second, as they capitalized on an odd man rush in the Raider zone. Leading a two on one rush down the left wing, Miguel Marques shot and picked the top corner far glove side past Hildebrand, catching a piece of the cross bar before crossing the goal line. Marques picked up his 23rd goal of the season to double the Hurricanes lead.

Kale Tipler scored his first WHL goal to give the Hurricanes a 3-0 lead with 9:53 left in the second. After taking a penalty, Tipler came out of the box and was given a breakaway feed. In alone on Hildebrand, Tipler sniped a shot glove side past Hildebrand, giving Lethbridge a comfortable three goal edge midway through the middle frame. They would take that 3-0 lead into the third period as well.

Krzysztof Macias cut into the deficit 8:46 into the third period, scoring a powerplay goal for the Raiders to make it 3-1. Sloan Stanick fed a pass across the ice to the left circle for Macias, and the Polish import took a shot-pass towards the net. The puck deflected off a Hurricane defender and into the net past Harrison Meneghin. Macias was credited with his 19th goal of the season as he made it a two-goal game.

With time winding down in the game, Prince Albert poured on a late attack. First it was Justice Christensen who came into the Lethbridge zone from the right wing firing a shot on goal. The puck trickled five hole through Meneghin and over the goal line, but the official had blown his whistle before it went in. After a video review, the call was overturned, and Christensen was awarded his ninth goal of the season, as the defenceman made it a 3-2 game with 40 seconds left on the clock.

With the net empty, the Hurricanes missed an empty netter, which allowed the Raiders to come back the other way for one final rush. Macias skated into the left corner with the puck and threw a pass in front of the net. After hitting a couple of bodies, it was collected by Turner McMillen, who fired a shot past Meneghin from the slot to tie the game at 3-3. In unbelievable fashion, the Raiders, who trailed 3-0 in the final 11:16 of regulation, came all the way back to tie the game, as McMillen's marker came with just four seconds left on the clock, sending the game to overtime.

From there, the Raiders needed just 17 seconds to complete the comeback, as Stanick delivered the dagger. From his own goal line, Christensen sent a lead pass ahead for Aiden Oiring, who skated into the offensive zone. He lost the puck, but Stanick was right behind him to pick it back up, and the overage forward sniped a shot glove side past Meneghin, giving the Raiders a crazy 4-3 comeback win with his 24th goal of the season.

Prince Albert is now back over .500 on the season, improving to 26-25-1-3, as the club picked up four points in a perfect 2-0 weekend, with tonight's overtime win and last night's shootout win in Medicine Hat.

The Raiders return home this week for a pair of games against the Brandon Wheat Kings on Thursday and Saturday night.
