POR - Third Period - Josh Mori (2) from Ryan Miller
VAN - Third Period - Mazden Leslie (13) from Ty Halaburda and Jaden Lipinski
The Story:
Josh Mori brought Portland within a goal in the third, but Brett Mirwald's 37 saves helped the Vancouver Giants steal a 3-1 win in B.C. on Friday night.
The Winterhawks' record now stands at 36-13-2-1 on the year (75pts, 1st Western Conference).
Tyson Zimmer had the hosts ahead just past the midway point of the first period, batting home a power-play marker at 13:11. Nate Danielson appeared to tie the game for the Winterhawks in the dying moments of the first, but his goal was ruled to have come just after the buzzer signaling the end of the frame. A tense second period saw just one goal as Logen Hammett made it 2-0 Vancouver at 7:38, executing a give-and-go play off the rush with Connor Levis.
Portland had its chances to punch back and finally broke through 2:16 into the third as Mori wired a slap shot from the blue line to dent Mirwald for the first time. The Hawks pushed and maintained pressure throughout the third, but an odd-man rush led to a Mazden Leslie insurance marker to put the game on ice.
Both teams head south for a rematch at the VMC on Saturday. Puck drop is set for 6:00 P.M. for Portland's Mascot Night, presented by Pacific Office Automation.
