Ontario Reign News Release
PHOENIX, Ariz. - The Ontario Reign, proud affiliate of the NHL Los Angeles Kings and AHL Manchester Monarchs, defeated the Phoenix RoadRunners, 4-2, in front of 2,603 fans at US Airways Center in Phoenix. The victory marked the Reign's sixth consecutive win over the RoadRunners this season. Three Reign players (Bud Holloway, Jon Rheault, and Denny Johnston) had multi-point games.
The Reign got on the board first in the match at 13:29 in the first period. Defenseman Andrew Martens launched a shot on goal that Phoenix netminder Chris Beckford-Tseu couldn't get in front of. Defenseman Dan Knapp and right wing Jon Rheault registered the assists on the play. At 17:74, the Reign scored their second unanswered goal and took a 2-0 lead. Right wing Denny Johnston sent a centering feed to right wing Bud Holloway from behind the net, and Holloway threw the puck past Beckford-Tseu. Right wing Jon Rheault also picked up an assist on the goal, and his second point of the night. The Reign took their 2-0 lead into the second period.
Just 41 seconds into the second period, Phoenix ended their scoreless night. Left wing Mark O'Leary fired the puck from the short side and beat Reign goaltender Jeff Zatkoff, with an assist from right wing Mitch Carefoot. The Reign answered back at 5:20, with a goal from Bud Holloway. A bid from Denny Johnston didn't make it to the net and bounced back out into the play. Holloway picked up Johnston's rebound and lifted the puck over Tseu's shoulder and into the net. Jon Rheault also registered an assist, bringing his point total to three for the night. Holloway notched his second goal of the match, and Johnston recorded his second assist. The teams headed into the final period of play, with Ontario looking to hold their 3-1 lead.
Phoenix cut the Reign lead to one at 9:15 into the third period. Right wing Dan DaSilva beat Zatkoff with a top-shelf shot that flew over the netminder's glove. Defenseman T.J. Campbell picked up the assist. The RoadRunners pulled Beckford-Tseu, hoping it would result in a game-tying goal. Instead, at 19:49, Bud Holloway found the empty net and the hat trick. Ontario went on to win the game with a final score of Reign 4, RoadRunners 2.
