Harrisburg Homers Their Way to Series Win, 4-1

HARRISBURG, PA - The Harrisburg Senators used a pair of home runs to push past the Richmond Flying Squirrels, 4-1, in the finale of a three-game series at Metro Bank Park on Thursday night. The Squirrels dropped the series with the loss, and in turn fell 2 1/2 games off the wild-card pace in the West Division.
Richmond came out swinging against right-hander Tanner Roark, racking up three consecutive hits to start the ballgame. Darren Ford opened the first inning with a double up the third-base line. Charlie Culberson followed and blasted a double off the wall in left-center field, plating Ford for a 1-0 lead. Peguero followed with a single to left field, but Culberson was gunned down at the plate by Bryce Harper to keep it a 1-0 score.
Derek Norris supplied the answer for Harrisburg in the bottom of the first off of Richmond left-hander Ryan Verdugo. On a payoff pitch from Verdugo, Norris cracked a solo-home run that wrapped around the left-field foul pole to tie the ballgame, 1-1. It was Norris' 15th home run of the season, and the 11th allowed by Verdugo.
Both starters settled in, and the ballgame remained tied into the fifth inning. In the bottom of the inning, Verdugo issued a lead-off walk to Adam Fox. Chris McConnell followed and cracked a two-run home run to left field to put the Senators in front for the first time, 3-1. It was the first home run of the season for McConnell.
Verdugo (7-5) departed to the loss after five innings, having conceded three runs on just three hits. He walked one and struck out eight, doomed to the defeat due to the two home runs for Harrisburg.
Left-hander Alex Hinshaw entered for the sixth inning, and issued a one-out walk to Chris Rahl. He swiped second base, took third on a groundout and scored when Harper bounced a single back through the middle.
Roark (7-8) called it a night with a 4-1 lead after seven innings. He earned his seventh win of the season, allowing just the lone run in the first inning on six total hits. He walked none and struck out five, earning his first victory of the season over Richmond in his fifth start against the Squirrels.
Right-hander Jimmy Barthmaier followed Roark into the ballgame and zipped through the eighth inning without incident. Right-hander Rafael Martin nailed down the win for Harrisburg with a scoreless ninth inning. He earned his 10th save of the season overall and third against the Squirrels.
The Squirrels travel to Binghamton, NY, to open a three-game series with the Binghamton Mets (New York Mets) at 7:05 PM on Friday night at NYSEG Stadium. LHP Clayton Tanner (5-8, 4.23) will make the start for Richmond against LHP Robert Carson (3-10, 4.88) for Binghamton.
