Gwinnett Hammers Tides 9-2
May 25, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Norfolk Tides News Release
Trey Mancini homered, but Gwinnett jumped out to an early lead and cruised to a 9-2 win over the Tides Wednesday afternoon at Harbor Park.
Mancini got the Tides on the board with a two-run, opposite-field home run in the third inning, his fourth home run with Norfolk since he was promoted to Triple-A on April 25. Mancini, who has now hit safely in four consecutive games, has 11 home runs between Double-A Bowie and Norfolk this year, tied for ninth in all of Minor League Baseball.
Norfolk starter Ariel Miranda (1-4) took the loss after yielding six runs (five earned) on a career-high 10 hits over four innings of work. He struck out three without walking a batter, but fell behind quickly as Gwinnett plated three runs on four hits in the first frame. He also surrendered a two-run, opposite-field homer to former Tide Brandon Snyder in the fourth inning.
Gwinnett blew the game open after plating three unearned runs in the ninth inning.
Mike Yastrzemski singled, walked and scored a run to help pace Norfolk's offense, as he extended his hitting streak to five games. He's now batted .405 (15-37) with eight extra-base hits and nine runs scored over his first 10 games at the Triple-A level.
After an off day Thursday, Norfolk welcomes the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders to Harbor Park on Friday for a three-game set. Odrisamer Despaigne (1-5, 3.97) gets the start for the Tides and will be opposed by right-hander Chad Green (3-3, 1.47).
On Friday, the first 5,000 fans will receive a Tides baseball cap, courtesy of Elizabeth River Tunnels and WAVY. The inflatable mascot characters The Zooperstars will also be on hand to entertain and amuse throughout Friday's ballgame.
Notes: Brian Duensing, signed as a free agent by Baltimore earlier this week, struck out two in a scoreless inning of relief in his Tides debut...Norfolk left 10 men on base and went 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position...Scott McGough retired all nine batters he faced in three perfect innings of relief...Tuesday's loss dropped Norfolk to 2-9 against Gwinnett this season...Thursday is Norfolk's second scheduled off day of the season, and its first at home.
