The Red Wings got off to a fast start with two home runs in the first inning. Byron Buxton came around to score after a leadoff double against Indians starter Kelvin Marte, but the real damage was yet to be done. Four batters later, Field launched a three-run shot to left field to score Eddie Rosario and Kennys Vargas. Adam Brett Walker followed it up with a 445-foot homer to left field to extend the Red Wings lead to 5-0.

The Wings hot start continued in the second inning as Buxton hit a 438-foot home run to center field to score Carlos Paulino, giving the Wings a 7-0 lead. The homer was Buxton's second in the series and fifth of the season. Buxton has now also reached base in 34 of his 37 games at Triple-A.

Wings starter Jason Wheeler was solid to start the game, but gave up two runs in the third inning after Josh Bell came around to score after being hit by a pitch and allowing an RBI single by Max Moroff to bring the Indians to within five runs at 7-2. Marte was the opposite, as he gave up seven runs on nine hits in the first three innings.

Marte (1-1) got into more trouble in the third, allowing runners to advance to second and third on a walk and ground-rule double from Wilfredo Tovar. Buxton was later intentionally walked to load the bases, but Marte managed to strike out James Beresford looking to escape the inning unscathed. Indians reliever John Kuchno relieved Marte and struggled at first, allowing one run on two hits, but quickly settled down and didn't allow a baserunner in the fifth or sixth innings.

Jorge Polanco tripled in the fourth and later scored on a single from Vargas to make it 8-2. It was Polanco's fifth triple of the season, one behind teammate Max Kepler's league leading six triples.

Wheeler (3-1) continued to pitch well through the sixth inning, keeping the Indians off the scoreboard while striking out three batters. Wheeler went six innings while allowing two earned runs and five hits, with a walk and three strikeouts. He threw 99 pitches, 64 for strikes.

Wheeler has gone at least five innings in each of his six starts, and has not allowed more than six hits in a game.

David Martinez relieved Wheeler in the seventh inning and struggled with his command to start, issuing two walks to the first two batters he faced. A double from Bell scored a run and made the score 8-3.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Rosario led off with a double and scored on an RBI hit by Field.

Martinez pitched one inning, and Alex Wimmers came on to pitch the top of the eighth. Ryan O'Rourke worked the ninth, allowing a run on a fielder's choice and loading the bases with one out. O'Rourke struck out Willy Garcia for the second out, but another run scored on an infield hit to make the score 9-5. Wings closer J.T. Chargois took over for ORourke to face former Wing Danny Ortiz, and Ortiz hit a grounder to second base. Polanco attempted to field the ball but misplayed it, letting two more runs score and bringing the Indians to within two at 9-7. Ed Easley lined a shot that glanced off Chargois' foot then caromed to left field, another run scored and it was a one-run game at 9-8. Chargois got a groundball out to snuff out the rally, secure the win, and record his third save.

Every Red Wings batter had at least one hit, as the Wings out-hit Indianapolis 14-13. The Indians came into Wednesday's game with the top staff earned run average in the league at 2.68. Buxton finished a triple short of the cycle, with three hits and a walk on the night.

NOTES: The Twins placed OF Darin Mastroianni on the disabled list, and purchased the contract of Wings LHP Buddy Boshers.
