NORFOLK, VA - The Gwinnett Braves (23-23) finished up a 3-2 road trip with a 9-2 victory over the Norfolk Tides (17-31) Wednesday afternoon at Harbor Park in the finale of the three-game series.
Gwinnett led the entire way as it quickly jumped on Norfolk starter Ariel Miranda for three runs in the top of the first. Ozzie Albies led off the game with a ground-rule double and moved to third on a bunt single by Jace Peterson. Emilio Bonifacio followed with an RBI single to put the G-Braves ahead 1-0, and Adonis Garcia picked up an RBI single of his own, doubling the advantage.
Matt Tuiasosopo then hit into a 4-6-3 double play, allowing Bonifacio to score from third for the third run of the frame.
In the top of the third, after a two-out double by Bonifacio, Garcia again came through with an RBI single to push the Gwinnett lead to 4-0.
Lawrenceville native Lucas Sims, in his seventh start for Gwinnett, had worked two scoreless innings but gave up a two-run homer in the bottom of the third to Trey Mancini which cut into the G-Braves lead at 4-2.
However, in the top of the fourth, the G-Braves got those two runs right back. Ronnier Mustelier singled to lead off the inning and Brandon Snyder followed with a two-run home run to right for a 6-2 lead. It was Snyder's second homer of the season.
The G-Braves capped the scoring in the top of the ninth, plating three runs off Norfolk reliever Edgar Olmos. Snyder scored on a throwing error by Michael Almanzar and both Peterson and Bonifacio picked up RBI singles.
Sims (W, 1-3) picked up his first Triple-A win by going 5.0 innings, allowing four hits and two earned runs. He walked six and struck out seven, moving back into the Minor League lead with 65 strikeouts. Lucas Harrell relieved Sims with 2.0 scoreless innings, yielding two hits and a walk while striking out two. Rob Wooten and Brandon Cunniff each worked 1.0 inning, registering a strikeout apiece.
Miranda (L, 1-4) allowed 10 hits and six runs (five earned) in 4.0 innings for Norfolk, while striking out three. Scott McGough tossed 3.0 scoreless innings of relief and both Brian Duensing and Olmos worked 1.0 innings, with Olmos allowing four hits and three runs in his.
For the G-Braves at the plate, Snyder was 2-for-4 with a double, a homer, two RBIs and two runs scored. Bonifacio went 3-for-5 with two runs, a double and two RBIs, while Garcia was 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Albies and Peterson each went 2-for-5 with a run scored, while Peterson added an RBI.
Norfolk was led by Mancini who was 1-for-3 with a two-run homer.
After a day off, the G-Braves return to Coolray Field Friday night to begin a six-game homestand at 7:05 p.m. with game one of a three-game series against the Syracuse Chiefs. Following the game there will be a fireworks spectacular, presented by Fox 5 Atlanta. Tony Schiavone has the call of the action beginning at 6:35 p.m. on 97.7 FM.
