Kalamazoo Growlers News Release
KALAMAZOO, MI -After the morning game against the Bombers in Battle Creek was rained out, Kalamazoo was looking to end the day with a victory against the Bombers in its home turf of Homer Stryker Field.
A victory was had in the confines of Homer Stryker, but a victory for the Bombers, 4-3. Battle Creek was able to achieve this victory by a strong outing from starting pitcher Edgar Sanchez (Prairie View A&M). Sanchez went seven strong innings and did not allow a hit, a single by Max Schuman (Utah), until the third inning. The hit was quickly erased, though, as the next batter John Soteropulos (Cal) hit into a double play.
Kalamazoo (4-11, 12-36) did not score until the seventh when a wild pitch from Sanchez allowed Kory Brown (BGSU), who led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a fielder's choice, to score. The second run of the inning came from a monster solo home run Nick Yarnall (Pitt) to right field.
The Growlers were able to add another run in the eighth, but then Bombers closer, Mason Marshall (BYU) came in for a five out save and did not allow a single hit.
Battle Creek's (4-9, 17-31) runs came in the 5th when Dan Swain (Siena) hit a two run home run to left field off Growlers' starter Andrew Shepherd (Jackson College). The next two runs came off the only All-Star from the Kalamazoo squad, Shane Bryant (Purdue) in the seventh.
Swain again the hero, hitting a double which scored a runner from second. The next run came from another double, this time from Michael Sanderson (Cal-Poly), which scored Swain from second.
Kalamazoo experienced the woes of what plagued them earlier in the season, allowing four errors which gave the Bombers extra base runners and extended the innings, and pitch counts, for Growlers' pitching.
The next game for Kalamazoo takes place on the road as it travels to Lakeshore to face the Chinooks.
