Kalamazoo Growlers News Release

Kalamazoo, Mich. - The Kalamazoo Growlers opened the game a bang at the plate, but they were unable to expand on their early 2-0 lead and fell to the Waterloo Bucks, 3-2, on Saturday night at Homer Stryker Field.

John Rubino (Eastern Michigan) walked to lead off the game for the Growlers (5-7), and Troy Montgomery (Ohio State) followed that with a booming triple to the wall in right-center. Jesse Puscheck (Canisius) drove Montgomery in with a sacrifice fly to make the score 2-0.

Though Ryan Colegate (Ohio Dominican) gave the Growlers a strong start, allowing two hits in 4 2/3 innings, the Bucks (6-6) gradually pushed back. They scored a run on an infield single after Devon Bronson (Eastern Michigan) entered with two outs in the fifth and tied the game with an RBI single from Connor McClain (Indiana State) in the eighth inning. Austin Cangelosi (Indiana) made an error at shortstop to open the ninth inning, and that runner came around to score the go-ahead run on a double down the left-field line. The Growlers went scoreless in the bottom of the inning.

Cangelosi had a three-hit night for the Growlers and Montgomery and Jared Kujawa (Western Michigan) added two hits of their own. Nick Yarnall (Pittsburgh) and Jalen Phillips (Duke) also had hits.

The Growlers will hit the road for two games against the Kenosha Kingfish and two more against the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters before returning to Homer Stryker Field on June 12 to face the Rochester Honkers in an inter-division matchup.
