
Grizzlies win wild one in Washington

The Gateway Grizzlies capped off a wild night in Washington with back-to-back home runs from oscar Vargas and Mike Breyman in the 10th inning. They went on to defeat the WildThings 11-9 Friday night.
The Grizzlies are 17-25. Washington drops to 24-18.
The Grizzlies led 8-6 heading into the eighth inning, when Ryan Hamilton came on to close out the game for the Grizzlies. Hamilton gave up back-to-back walks to start the inning, before giving up a three-run home run to Miek Arbinger. That put the WildThings up 9-8.
The Grizzlies battled back in the ninth. Eric Sansouci was walked, then immediately stole second. He advanced to third on a fly out by Brandon Averill and came to the plate on a wild pitch by Washington closer Jim Popp. That made it 9 all.
Marcus Barriger worked in and out of trouble in the bottom of the ninth holding the tie, and forcing extra innings-where Vargas and Breyman put the Grizzlies up for good.
Barriger (1-0) went 1.2 innings, without allowing a run. He allowed just two hits. He struck out one. Matt Powell earned the save, against his former team, pitching the final 2/3 of the 10th.
Breyman led the way for the Grizzlies. Breyman was 3-6 with the home run and three RBIs. Vargas was 1-1 with the homer and a walk. Jimmy Reiter, Ben Margalski and Phil Warren each had two hits and an RBI. Brandon Averill also added an RBI for the Grizzlies.
The Grizzlies finish out the first half of the season with a three-game set in Richmond, Ind. Game time Saturday night is 6:35. Fans can tune in beginng at 6:20 on 1380 ESPN and the Grizzlies radio network.
