Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

SAUGET, IL - The Traverse City Beach Bums got homeruns from Chris Kay and Jose Vargas, but the display of power was not enough as the Beach Bums fell to the Gateway Grizzlies by a score of 6-3.

The Grizzlies go single runs in each of the first two innings to go up 2-0. The game would stay that way until the sixth when with one out, Kay unloaded on a pitch to left for his first long ball of the year to cut the lead to 2-1.

The bottom of the sixth proved to be the difference in the game, however, as with a run already across, Antone DeJesus lined a thre-run homer over the short wall in rightfield to make it 6-1 Gateway.

Traverse City responded in the top of the seventh as Vargas drove a no-doubter out to left for a two-run blast, scoring Jeff Flagg as well who had walked one out earlier. That was as close as TC would get, however, as the Grizzlies bullpen closed the door over the final two innings.

Alex Kaminsky (3-0) earned the win while Jacob Clem (1-1) took the loss for the Beach Bums.

Offensively, in addition to the homers, Flagg singled in the ninth to extend his hitting streak to seven games. On the mound, Jason Mattila had his best outing to date, tossing 2.1 scoreless, hitless innings.

Game two of the series comes up on Saturday as Reid Kelly (2-0, 3.57) starts for Traverse City against Jonathan Gonzalez (1-0, 0.69) for Gateway. Coverage on Sunny Country 101.9 begins at 7:45 p.m. outside of an 8:05 scheduled first pitch.

The Beach Bums will return home on Tuesday, June 5 when they will take on the Rockford RiverHawks in a Two for Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. All chairback seats are 2-for-1 that night.
