Joliet, IL-After an unexpected off day yesterday due to a rainout in Windy City, the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, fell to the Joliet Slammers in the first game of the series, 15-2.
The Slammers quickly took the lead in the bottom of the first inning and never allowed the Wild Things to take advantage of key opportunities. Joliet left fielder David Fox had a strong performance at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two runs and four RBIs.
Washington scored their two runs of the game in the top of the fifth inning. Right fielder Allen Boyer hit a single and drove in first baseman Michael Bando and second baseman Nick Lockwood. Shortstop Michael Mooney went 2-for-5 on the night.
The newly-signed Eric Blackwell had the start on the mound for Washington and lasted two innings. Blackwell allowed eight runs (all earned) on eight hits, with one walk and two strikeouts. Alan Gatz pitched two innings in relief and allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits. Gatz walked one batter and struck out another.
Joliet starting pitcher Eric Binder lasted five innings and allowed two runs (both earned) on four hits. Binder walked two and struck out six. Chase Doremus spent two innings on the mound in relief and allowed no runs or hits, with one walk and one strikeout.
The Wild Things face off against the Joliet Slammers again Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. The pre-game show starts at 6:55 p.m. and fans can listen in on WJPA 95.3 FM or at www.msasports.net. The Wild Things return home on Tuesday, June 5th, for a six-game homestand.
