Joliet Slammers News Release
(Joliet, IL)- The Slammers were firing on all cylinders on Friday night at Silver Cross Field, stringing together 16 hits en route to a 15-2 blowout of the Washington Wild Things.
Joliet systematically destroyed Washington's pitching, starting in the first inning. After Eric Binder kept the Wild Things scoreless in the first, Abel Nieves reached on a walk with one away. Erik Lis drove him in on an RBI single, the first of four hits he compiled in the contest.
The Slammers pulled further ahead in the second with a four-run inning. David Fox led off with a double, and Kyle Maunus brought him around on an RBI single. Sean Estand followed with a single of his own, and both moved into scoring position on a Trevor Willis sacrifice bunt. Ben Hewett brought in a run on an RBI groundout, and Nieves contributed a pair of runs on a homer late in the inning.
Joliet took the 5-0 lead into the third, when they put up a trio, courtesy of a three-run bomb from Fox with no outs in the inning. They would pounce again in the fourth when Lis doubled again for another run, and Fox picked up his fourth RBI bringing in Hector Pellot on a sac fly, making it 10-0.
The Wild Things finally got on the board in the fifth when Allen Boyer brought home Michael Bando and Nick Lockwood, who reached on a walk and single.
The Slammers kept rolling in the sixth with another pair of runs. Pellot walked with one away, and came around to score on another Erik Lis single; both runners received an extra base on an overthrow error, allowing Pellot to score. Lis came home on a sac fly RBI by Zach Mandelblatt, giving back Joliet the double-digit lead, 12-2.
Joliet finished the Wild Things off in the eighth with yet another three-run effort. Mandelblatt scored when Trevor Willis grounded to third, Abel Nieves drew a bases-loaded walk, and Pellot singled to bring around Brad Netzel.
In his second start for Joliet, Eric Binder was stellar once again, tossing five innings on two runs, while Chase Doremus, Geoff Brown, and Jim Schult finished off Washington, allowing no runs after the fifth inning.
Joliet looks to make it five straight on Saturday night in game two against Washington at Silver Cross Field in a 6:05pm start. It will be Pirate Night at the ballpark, where the first 1000 fans to arrive will receive an exclusive Slammers Bandana. Fans can listen live on AM 1340 WJOL with Aaron Morse and Greg Talbott calling the action.
