Miners Boom Past Schaumburg

Marion, IL - The Miners boomed past Schaumburg tonight as they won by a score of 7-2. Miners starter Shawn Gilblair was extremely impressive in his third consecutive start.

Gilblair tossed six innings, gave up four hits, allowed one run, walked one and struck out six batters. The Miners offense came ready to play as well, as they amassed nine hits total. Chad Maddox set the tone early with a one out triple to give the Miners a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Matt Fields then brought him in with a one out double to give the Miners a 2-0 lead.

After the Boomers scored in the top of the third, the Miners really opened up against Boomers starter Tyler Watkins. Chad Maddox got on base with a one out single then Matt Fields hit a two run home run (6th of season) to give the Miners a 4-1 lead. Carlos Mendez extended the inning by getting on base with an error by Boomers third baseman Frank Fister which then set up a two out single by Sean Coughlin. Sean Harrell then brought them in with a RBI single.

The Miners added another run in the bottom of the eighth, as Sean Coughlin hit a RBI triple (first of season) off Boomers reliever Thomas Nelson to give the Miners a 7-1 lead. The Boomers scored a run in the top of the ninth off Miners reliever Darrin Tew, but Gabe Shaw came in and struck out the final two batters to close out the 7-2 lead for the Miners. The Miners improve to 8-5 on the season. Schaumburg falls to 8-5.

The Miners will send Thomas Campbell (0-2, 11.12 ERA) to the mound tomorrow as he'll be opposed by RHP Robbie Penny (1-0, 2.77 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05.
