Florence Blows Past CornBelters

FLORENCE, Ky. - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, took an early lead but could not hold it in a 7-3 loss to the Florence Freedom on Friday night at the Home of the Freedom.

The CornBelters put two runs on the board in the third inning after leadoff walks to Derek Luciano and Pat McKenna. After Justin Clark sacrificed the runners to second and third, Alvaro Ramirez flared a single to left to score both.

The Freedom countered with four runs in the bottom of the third, tying the game after two were out thanks to RBI singles from Chris Curley and Eddie Rodriguez and taking the 4-2 lead on a two-run double by Jim Jacquot.

Florence extended the lead to 6-2 on a towering two-run homer to left by Eddie Rodriguez, which also scored Cole Miles after he reached via leadoff walk.

The starters picked up the decisions, as Maxx Catapano (1-0) earned the victory with a seven-inning outing in which he gave up two runs on four hits with three walks while striking out six. Justin Albert (0-2) suffered the loss by going 3.2 innings, giving up four runs on nine hits with one walk without a strikeout.

The CornBelters continue the series on Saturday at 6:05 p.m. Central with right-hander Elio Briones (0-1, 10.13 ERA) starting for the CornBelters against the Freedom's Andres Caceres (1-1, 5.25 ERA). Pre-game on WJBC.com begins at 5:50.
