Grizzlies take series from Mavs

The Gateway Grizzlies scored six runs in the second inning Thursday night en route to a 7-4 win over the Mid-Missouri Mavericks in Coluumbia, MO.

The Grizzlies improve to 34-37 with the win. Mid-Missouri drops to 23-47.

All six runs in the second were unearned against Mavericks starter Steve Soja (5-8). Five different Grizzlies picked up RBIs in the inning, including Mike Breyman who drove in a pair with a single. Breyman finished the night 3-6. He finished the series 8-14 with four RBIs. Eric Sansouci was 2-6 with a pair of RBIs on the night as well.

Erik Dessau started but lasted just three innings. Dessau was involved in a collision covering third base. He finished the inning, but would not return. Dessau gave up a run on two hits. Chris Little (1-0) picked up the win in relief. Little went three innings, allowing two runs on two hits. He struck out four. Scott Patterson pitched the eighth and ninth for his fourth save of the year. Patterson allowed a run, his first of the year in 16-plus innings, on a leadoff home run in the eighth by Alex Derhak.

The Grizzlies will return home to GMC Stadium to face the Rockford RiverHawks in a three-game weekend series. Game time Friday night is 7:05 p.m.

The Grizzlies will begin the series just four games behind first-place in the West Division. Rockford and Kalamazoo are currently tied for first. The Grizzlies are just one game behind River City for third place in the division. The top two teams in each division make the playoffs.
