Florence Y'alls News Release

Gateway starting pitcher Ja'Vaun West (W, 3-0) threw seven innings of one-hit shutout baseball to lift the Grizzlies (10-7) over the Freedom (11-7) by a score of 6-1, snapping a five-game Florence win streak.

West held the Freedom hitless until the sixth inning, when Florence second baseman Eric Groff led off that frame with an infield hit.

The Grizzlies would break open the scoring in the first inning on a two-out error by Jacob Tanis to plate Antoine DeJesus and give Gateway a 1-0 lead against Freedom starter Brandon Mathes (L, 0-3).

Gateway would score all the runs they would need in the third inning on a two-run triple by shortstop Vladimir Frias to push the lead to 3-0.

The lead would grow to six in the sixth inning. Michael Pair, would make it 4-0 with an RBI single and catcher Landon Hernandez would push the lead to 6-0 with a two-run single of his own.

The Freedom bats would continue to be held in check by the Grizzlies bullpen. Florence would manage to scratch across a run in the eighth on an RBI single by Jacob Tanis to cut the lead to 6-1. But the Freedom would get no closer as they would go down in order in the ninth to end the game.

The Freedom now embark on a short three game road trip to first place Evansville. First pitch between the Freedom and Otters is tomorrow night at 7:35. The game can be heard on 1320-AM WCVG or at gospel1320.com. Steve Jarnicki will have all the play-by-play action beginning with the pregame show at 7:20.
