Sacramento River Cats News Release
WEST SACRAMENTO, CA. - The Sacramento River Cats couldn't spark their offense as they were shutout for the seventh time this season by the Fresno Grizzlies, 7-0, Monday night at Raley Field.
The Grizzlies' Chris Dominguez knocked in his 14th home run of the season in the top of the second inning to get Fresno on the board early. Singles in the third and fourth innings put the Grizzlies up 4-0, and a sacrifice fly to left field scored their fifth run.
River Cats' lefty Mike Zagurski hit a batter to walk in a run and Angel Pagan - who is on a rehab assignment from the San Francisco Giants - singled in the eighth to score their seventh and final run, as the Grizzlies took the first game of the series, 6-0.
Pagan finished 2-for-4 with an RBI in his first appearance at Raley Field this season.
Jemile Weeks led the River Cats as he went 2-for-3 with a walk, while Michael Choice finished 1-for-3 with a double. Michael Taylor, Shane Peterson, and Anthony Aliotti each recorded a hit, while Aliotti extended his hitting streak to seven games - his longest of the season.
Sacramento's starter, righty Bruce Billings, was tagged with his seventh loss of the season. He gave up five earned runs off eight hits, while striking out four in four innings of work. Billings is still one win shy of tying the River Cats' franchise records for wins in a season.
Relievers Zagurski and righty Paul Smyth combined for four hits, two earned runs, and two strikeouts in three innings of relief. Left-hander Pedro Figueroa tossed one scoreless inning as he struck out two and gave up one hit in the ninth.
Grizzlies' pitcher Fabio Castillo was credited with the win. Castillo allowed three hits, while he struck out three and walked only one in his three-inning appearance in Monday's loss. The River Cats failed to score a run for only the seventh time so far this season.
The River Cats head into game two against the Fresno Grizzlies - the Triple-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants - in their final home series. Travis Banwart (9-5, 4.56 ERA) will be on the mound, starting opposite righty Justin Fitzgerald (2-6, 6.05 ERA), culminating in Fan Appreciation Day on Thursday, Aug. 29.
