Omaha Storm Chasers News Release

Des Moines, IA - Edwin Maysonet drove in three runs as Iowa survived five errors and a late comeback attempt by Omaha in a 7-6 victory Tuesday night in the second of a four-game series at Principal Park. The Storm Chasers fell for a seventh time in their last nine games to dip to 67-71 and see their lead over Memphis in the American Conference North Division trimmed to a single game after the Redbirds victory in New Orleans.

Ty Wright started the home first inning with a base hit, moved to second on a walk to Dave Sappelt and scored on a one-out single by Mike Olt, who had just eight hits in his first 44 at-bats against Omaha pitching. Maysonet delivered Sappelt with a sacrifice fly to give the hosts a 2-0 advantage against Chris Dwyer, who was making his third start against Iowa this season. The Cubs added another run in the second on a run-scoring single by Sappelt that chased home Julio Borbon, who had singled, advanced to second on a walk to Wright and then swiped third base.

Omaha got right back in the game in the third with a pair of runs on a Ben Broussard RBI ground out and a Brett Hayes sacrifice fly but the Cubs answered in the bottom of the frame on a Luis Flores solo home run to push the lead back to a pair.

Borbon walked with one out in the sixth and moved to second on a two-out single by Sappelt that spelled the end of the line for Dywer, who took the loss after he yielded six runs on seven hits and a season-high six walks over 5 2/3 innings. Francisley Bueno took over and gave up an RBI hit to Edgar Gonzalez and a two-run single to Maysonet that increased the Iowa advantage to 7-2.

Max Ramirez opened the eighth inning with a walk against Zach Rosscup and came in to score with the aid of the last two Cubs errors to slice the lead to four. Irving Falu singled to load the bases for Christian Colon, who lined out on a leaping grab by Olt, the third baseman who had committed two of the Iowa miscues. Brian Schlitter came on and gave up a base hit to Johnny Giavotella that scored Pedro Ciriaco and Paulo Orlando to close the gap to 7-5 before Broussard smoked a single to drive in Falu to account for the final margin. Schlitter then retired the side in order in the ninth to earn his 19th save in 20 tries and pull the Cubs within four games of the lead after they defeated the Storm Chasers for a 10th time in 14 meetings.

The series continues Wednesday evening with Omaha sending Kansas City Royals right-hander Felipe Paulino to the mound for a rehab start against Iowa righty Kyle Hendricks. Coverage of the game gets underway at 6:15 pm and can be heard locally on 1180 Zonet 2 The Deuce and online at omahastormchasers.com.
