Owings Named 2013 PCL Rookie of the Year

Published on August 27, 2013 under Pacific Coast League (PCL1) News Release

ROUND ROCK, Texas - Reno Aces shortstop Chris Owings has been named the 2013 Pacific Coast League Rookie of the Year, the league announced today.

Owings, from Charleston, South Carolina, was voted the league's top rookie after a balloting of the PCL field managers and media representatives from across the league. The award was created in 1998 and honors a player's outstanding achievement during his first year at the Triple- A level.

Owings, 22, has played in 118 games with Reno this season and has knotted a .331 batting average, good for second in the league. He leads the PCL in hits (170), runs (97), and total bases (247). Additionally, Owings has 27 doubles, 12 home runs and seven triples to go along with 73 RBI and 16 stolen bases. Owings offensive numbers are impressive, but his glove is equally sound as he leads all shortstops with 331 assists and is tied for fourth with 124 putouts.

Selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 1st round of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft out of Gilbert High School, Owings carries a .291 average over five minor league seasons. This year he was selected as the PCL's starting shortstop for the Triple-A All-Star game in July, and on Monday, was named the shortstop on the league's All-PCL Team.

Owings becomes the third straight player from the Reno franchise to be named the PCL's top rookie after Collin Cowgill won the award in 2011 and Adam Eaton took home the crown last season. He is the fourth player in Diamondbacks' Triple-A affiliate history to earn the award.

The first was Josh Whitesell with the Tucson Sidewinders in 2008.

Among the others to receive votes for the Rookie of the Year award were Wilmer Flores (Las Vegas), Dean Anna (Tucson), George Springer (Oklahoma City), Michael Choice (Sacramento) and Corey Dickerson (Colorado Springs).

All statistics used are through Monday, August 26th .
