Sky Sox Get Swept by Las Vegas in Doubleheader

August 27, 2013 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

The Colorado Springs Sky Sox (64-71) get swept by the Las Vegas 51s (78-58) in today's doubleheader, losing 2-1 and 10-9 to fall to a season-high seven games under .500.

The first game featured a pitching duel between Chris Volstad and Chris Schwinden. Volstad was spectacular again for the Sky Sox. The righty surrendered a run in the third inning on a RBI single by Ruben Tejada, but then settled down and finished the day only allowing one run in eight innings. The eight inning outing ties his season-high for his longest start of the year which he set last week against Tacoma.

Colorado Springs scored their only run of the day in the fourth inning on a Ben Paulsen solo home run that tied the game at one. The contest would remain scoreless until the top of the 10th inning. Reliever Mitchell Boggs (L, 1-5) recorded the first two outs in the innings, but an error by Reid Brignac brought home Kirk Nieuwenhuis who reached on a double. Las Vegas lefty Sean Henn came on in the bottom of the ninth and earned his second save of the season.

The second game of the doubleheader began very differently than the first. In the first inning the two teams matched the run total of the first game when the 51s scored one run in the first and the Sky Sox scored two runs to take the lead in the bottom of the inning. Las Vegas' offense exploded in the third inning, scoring five runs on a bases loaded walk, a sacrifice fly, and three RBI singles.

In the bottom of the third the Sky Sox brought the game within one on three runs which were aided by an error by starting pitcher Mitch Talbot. Both teams scored two runs in the fourth and the 51s took a 9-7 lead in the fifth inning on a solo homer by Brandon Hicks. Colorado Springs was finally able to tie the game in the bottom of that inning when reliever Greg Burke loaded the bases and was then relieved by Tim Brydak (W, 2-0) who walked in a run and then hit Paulsen to bring home the other.

The stalemate did not last long, however, as Mike McClendon (L, 6-8) put the first two batters he faced on base and then allowed them to advance to second and third on a sacrifice bunt by Zach Lutz. Nieuwenhuis then grounded out to bring home Eric Campbell.

After the top of the sixth Las Vegas relievers Sean Henn and Jamie Hampson made their second appearances of the day and combined to shutout the Sox and secure the 10-9 win.

Tomorrow, the Sky Sox will look to win their first game of the series when they send out right-hander Tyler Chatwood (2-1, 3.14), who will be making a rehab-start, against righty Giancarlo Alvarado (5-4, 3.21) at 6:35 PM MT.
