Grizzlies Pound Wild Things in Series Opener

SAUGET, IL - The Gateway Grizzlies scored a season-high 16 runs and recorded a season-high 18 hits in a 16-5 drubbing of the Washington Wild Things Tuesday night at GCS Ballpark.

The Grizzlies, who lead the West Division by four games, had five players record at least two hits and five players score at least two runs.

Chris McClendon and Antone DeJesus both collected four hits. Jet Butler, Jon Myers, DeJesus and Michael Pair all homered for Gateway.

Gateway (26-13) jumped out to an 8-0 lead after scoring four runs in each of the first two innings.

McClendon started the scoring with an RBI double in the first inning that scored Jose Flores. Butler brought in McClendon with a two-run home run and Jon Myers followed with a solo home run to give the Grizzlies a four run lead on back-to-back home runs.

In the second inning, McClendon doubled again, driving in his second and third runs of the game. Landon Hernandez and Butler made it 8-0 Gateway on back-to-back RBI singles.

Washington (21-19) tried to inch closer with solo home runs by Mark Samuelson and CJ Beatty in the third inning.

Beatty smashed a three-run home run in the fifth inning, his second of the game, to make the scored 8-5.

Gateway then reeled off eight unanswered runs. DeJesus, who extended his team-high hitting streak to 14 games, blasted a solo home run to right field in the fifth inning to give the Grizzlies a four run lead.

Hernandez brought in a run with a double in the sixth.

Gateway scored four runs on four hits in the seventh. Pair hammered his fifth home run of the season, Flores picked up an RBI triple and McClendon knocked in a run with a single.

The Grizzlies moved their run total to 16 with two runs in the eighth.

Tim Brown (6-2) notched the victory for the Grizzlies, firing seven innings. He allowed five runs on seven hits.

The Grizzlies continue their series with the Wild Things Wednesday night. There will be postgame fireworks presented by Pepsi. Ja'Vaun West (6-1) makes the start for the Grizzlies. First pitch is set for 6:05.
