Joliet Slammers News Release

(Joliet, IL) - Joliet skipper Mike Breyman has said several times he has a talented squad.

On Wednesday night the Slammers (17-24) put that talent on display in one of Joliet's most impressive outings, dominating the Frontier Greys (15-25) by a final of 9-1.

It was the combination of dominant pitching from Shawn Kale (2-2) and an overpowering offense that led to Joliet evening the series with the Greys at one game a piece and setting up a rubber game match-up on Thursday.

Kale was almost untouchable in his fourth start of the year as he allowed an early double in the second inning, then Kale went on to retire 18 batters in a row before making one mistake to Blake Bergeron, who hit a solo home run in the eighth. Kale's final line in the victory was eight innings, one run allowed on two hits and seven strikeouts.

But it was not only the pitching that was impressive Wednesday as Joliet's offense recorded 13 hits with three of those being long balls. Seth Schwindenhammer was the offensive star as the left-handed slugger crushed two home runs on the night, driving in three.

The Slammers struck first in this contest, just like in game one. But this time five runs scored in the third inning as opposed to only the one run in the first game.

Ben Hewett, who had his best game at the plate going 3-4, led off the third with a single and Niko Vasquez followed the Slammers' catcher with a single of his own. Marquis Riley move both runners over on a sacrifice bunt, which set up Grant DeBruin who drove both Hewett and Vasquez home on a two-run single.

With two down in the frame Nick Akins singled and advanced to second on an error by the Grey's right fielder Justin Vasquez. DeBruin scored to make it a 3-0 Joliet advantage. Schwindenhammer then picked up his first of two long balls after crushing a line-drive home run over the right field wall making it a 5-0 game.

The Slammers would add four more insurance runs in the ballgame. One run came home in the fifth and two more scored in the sixth inning on the second home run of the night for Joliet and the first for Marquis Riley.

In the seventh inning, Seth Schwindenhammer went even deeper to right, this time on a solo shot, making it a 9-0 Slammers lead.

Joliet looks to win the series Thursday on the fourth of July, with the rubber game starting at 7:05 p.m. at Silver Cross Field. Rookie Matt Dillon (0-1, 1.63) gets the call tomorrow for the Slammers as he will face Casey Delgado (0-1, 0.96) for the Frontier Greys. Fans will enjoy fireworks after the game!
