
Wild Things Fall 5-0 to Gateway

Sauget, Ill.-- Three home runs by the Gateway Grizzles launched them to a 5-0 win over the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, at GCS Ballpark on Wednesday.
Gateway was hit-less in the first two innings against Wild Things starter Gary Lee (3-4) . In the bottom of the third, they got their first hit and run.
Antone DeJesus ledvoff the inning with a single into left field for the Grizzles' first hit of the game. The next batter, Michael Pair, launched the 2-1 offering from Lee for his sixth home run of the year. With two outs, Landon Hernandez scored Jonathan Johnson with a single into right field. This gave Gateway a 3-0 lead.
After Gateway took the lead, Washington would threaten in the next two innings, but could not convert. In the top of the fourth and fifth, CJ Beatty and Scott Kalamar started the inning by getting to second base, but both would be stranded on the base paths.
The Grizzles extended their lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the of the fifth with back-to-back home runs off by from Hernandez and Jet Butler.
Lee started the bottom of the sixth with a walk and double to Vladimir Frias and Dejesus, respectively. Manager Bart Zeller pulled Lee and brought in Anthony Collazo with runners on second and third. Collazo was able to leave the runners stranded by getting Pair to ground out to first, and Johnson to fly out to Kalamar, who doubled up Frias attempted to score from third.
Grizzles' starter JaVaun West improved to 7-1 on the year. He pitched seven innings allowing four hits, walking three and striking out seven.
Washington and Gateway close this series on Thursday with first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. EDT. Airtime on WJPA 95.3 FM is 6:55 p.m.
The Wild Things return to CONSOL Energy Park for a three game set on July 9. Tickets for that series and for the 2013 All Star Festivities, which will be contested at CONSOL Energy Park in mid July, are available at the box office.
