
Miners Storm Back for Win

Schaumburg, IL - The Miners are beginning to roll as they trailed early 3-0 and stormed back to defeat the Schaumburg Boomers 6-5 on Wednesday night. Miners reliever Pete Perez (1-0) earned his first professional victory as he pitched a scoreless seventh inning. Race Parmenter earned his first professional save as he pitched a scoreless inning and a third. The Miners are now 23-18 on the season and five games over .500.
Schaumburg scored three runs off Miners starting pitcher Travis Bradshaw in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 3-0 lead. Bradshaw would turn in a solid outing as he pitched six innings and gave up seven hits, three runs and walks with four strikeouts.
Southern Illinois scored a run in the top of the fifth inning off Boomers starter Chris Phelan as Cannon Lester hit a sacrifice fly to score Cory Harrilchak to cut the Boomers lead to two, 3-1. Lester added another sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh inning off Phelan to score Jason Ganek and bring the Miners within one run, 3-2. Phelan left the game after 6 and 2/3 innings.
The Miners attacked Boomers reliever Preston Hatcher (1-1) for three runs in the top of the eighth inning as Steven Liddle hit his first home run as a Miner to tie the game at three. Gerardo Avila put the Miners ahead 4-3 on a RBI single to score Carlos Mendez. James Bierlein entered the game with Avila on second base. Cannon Lester capped off the inning as he hit a two RBI single off Bierlein to score Jason Ganek and Gerardo Avila to give the Miners a 6-3 lead.
Schaumburg scored two runs off Michael Hepple in the bottom of the eighth inning to cut the Miners lead to one, 6-5. Race Parmenter closed out the game in the bottom of the ninth inning to secure the win for the Miners. The Miners look for their second series sweep of the season.
Richard Sullivan (2-3, 4.40 ERA) will be on the mound Thursday night in the series finale. He'll be opposed by right-handed pitcher Mike Giovenco (3-4, 4.75 ERA). First pitch will get underway at 6:30 pm. The Southern Illinois Miners are the 2012 Frontier League Champions and have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year three times since its inception. It has also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007.
