Fresno Grizzlies News Release
Fresno, CA - The Fresno Grizzlies battled the New Orleans Zephyrs in a back-and-forth game Sunday evening, enough so that the two teams fought into the 13th inning, where the Grizzlies eventually pulled out a 5-4 victory.
The hero of the night proved to be Fresno's Justin Leone, who came through with a double in the bottom of the 13th, scoring teammate William Bergolla, who a batter before reached on an error by Zephyrs third baseman Fernando Tatis.
Early on in the game, it looked as if the Grizzlies (59-57) would find smooth sailing against the Zephyrs (62-53), especially as center fielder Clay Timpner hit his sixth home run of the year, a two-run shot, off of New Orleans starter Adam Bostick.
The homer was part of a two-hit night for Timpner in his first game played since he ended his recent streak of 38 games in which he reached base safely in all home games played with a plate appearance.
In the fifth inning, the Grizzlies would extend their lead to 3-0, as Leone hit his 18th home run of the season. Leone also stole his 19th base in the game, batting in the leadoff spot for the second consecutive night.
But it was just a half-inning later that the Grizzlies found rough waters, as New Orleans left fielder Ricky Ledee hit a three-run home run to tie the game at 3-3. From then on, it became a pitcher's duel between the two teams.
The home run by Ledee proved to be the only chink in the armor for Fresno starter Travis Blackley, who pitched seven quality innings, allowing only four hits and three runs, while striking out six Zephyrs. Fresno reliever Erick Threets picked up his second win of the year, while New Orleans' Steve Schmoll got his third loss.
The four-game series between the Grizzlies and Zephyrs continues tomorrow for Monday Madness (presented by Wienerschnitzel). Grizzlies fans will be able to cash in on a great deal, as 2 tickets, 2 hot dogs and 2 sodas will be available for just $14.
Tickets are available at the Chukchansi Park ticket office, over the phone at 559-320-TIXS, or online at www.fresnogrizzlies.com.
