Tucson Sidewinders News Release

Omaha, NE - Matt Erickson's RBI double in the top of the seventh inning plated Jamie D'Antona and led the Sidewinders to a 6-5 win over the Omaha Royals on Monday night. The two base hit extended Erickson's hitting streak to 11, the fourth longest Sidewinders hitting streak this season.

Brandon Medders pitched the ninth for his second save. He allowed a one out base hit to Craig Brazell but struck out Ryan Shealy and retired Mitch Maier on a fly ball to centerfield.

The Sidewinders raced out to a 5-0 lead with a five run top of the second inning. Shealy's error allowed two runs to score and Alberto Callaspo, Alex Romero and Robby Hammock all had RBI singles.

Omaha rallied with a five run inning of their own to tie the game. After Enrique Gonzalez had shut the Royals out for the first 4 1/3 innings, he allowed three consecutive singles to end the shutout and snap his personal scoreless streak at 22 1/3 innings. Two walks, two singles and a sacrifice fly later, the game was tied and Gonzalez was lifted for the bullpen. Mike Schultz entered and walked Matt Tupman to load the bases but got Fernando Cortez to ground out to first to end the inning.

Schultz earned the win with 1 1/3 innings of shutout baseball.

Omaha had chances to rally against Dustin Nippert in the seventh and eighth innings but could not get the job done. Nippert allowed a hit and two walks in the seventh to load the bases but induced a 6-4-3 double play from Cortez to end the inning. In the eighth, after a walk to Chris Lubanski to open the inning, Nippert retired Angel Berroa on a 3-6-3 double play.

The Sidewinders and Royals play game three of their series on Tuesday night at Rosenblatt Stadium. Right-hander Casey Daigle (9-2, 5.79) starts for Tucson against right-hander Matt Wright (7-3, 3.93) for Omaha. First pitch is at 5:05 Tucson time. The game will air LIVE on COOL 1450 beginning at 5:00.
