LAS VEGAS: The Las Vegas 51s professional baseball team of the Pacific Coast League (PCL), Triple-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers, and the United Methodist Social Ministries, Las Vegas will team together to promote a canned food drive on Friday, August 24. The 51s will host the Tucson Sidewinders, Triple-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks, on John Kruk Bobblehead Night & Carl's Jr. Family Night at 7:11 p.m. at Cashman Field.

The 51s organization, celebrating their "25th PCL Season," is dedicated to be a community partner and fans will have the opportunity to participate in this important cause.

Fans can bring both canned food items and all non-perishable food items (i.e., pasta) to the ball park. The non-perishable items will be collected when fans enter Cashman Field. Fans who donate the non-perishable food items will receive a raffle ticket and will have a chance to win one of five "51s Priced Packages."

United Methodist Social Ministries, Inc. has been in existence for more than 20 years and currently operates three programs: the Weekend Emergency Assistance Program (WEAP), which supplies emergency food to families on the weekends when other service providers are not available; the Hats and Hands Program, which provides cold weather clothing to the homeless during the winter months; and the Employment Essentials program, which provides interview appropriate clothing to those returning to the workforce and therefore moving from welfare to work.

UMSM's website address is www.umsmlasvegas.org and the phone number is (702) 383-4054.

The Weekend Emergency Assistance Program (WEAP) for which the canned items for this event will go to has been existence since 1989. WEAP is the only program open consistently each weekend of the year, and operates three locations throughout the Las Vegas valley. Each family served receives enough food items to feed each family member, three meals for three days. In addition to food items, clients receive a food voucher to purchase perishable items, which cannot store at the Social Ministries facility.

In the past two years, WEAP has seen an increase in the numbers served of more than 39%. The reasons include: the increasing number of people moving to the Las Vegas valley, the growth of low-wage, service industry jobs available, and the increasing number of clients who have exhausted their federal welfare benefits, to name just a few.

Tickets for all 51s home games can be purchased at the Cashman Field Box Office. The box office is open Monday-Friday from Noon to 4:30 p.m. Tickets can also be purchased through TicketMaster (474-4000, www.ticketmaster.com). TicketMaster outlets are located at selected Smith's Food & Drug, Ritmo Latino and Macy's, located at The Fashion Show & The Galleria Mall.

The individual game tickets for the 72-game home season are priced at $8.00 (general admission), $9.00 (reserved), $11.00 (plaza) and $13 (field). The traditional $2.00 discount for Military personnel is offered on plaza, reserved and G.A. seats throughout the season except for the holiday fireworks shows that were featured on June 30 & July 3.

Season tickets are available by calling the 51s office at (702) 798-7825.
