Gateway Grizzlies News Release
CRESTWOOD, Ill. - The Gateway Grizzlies let an early lead slip away at Standard Bank Stadium on Wednesday night, as the Windy City ThunderBolts scored four unanswered runs to beat Gateway, 5-4.
With the Grizzlies leading 4-3 in the sixth, RHP Jordan Wellander (2-1) gave up a two-run homer to Austin Gallagher. The first baseman's second long ball of the night gave Windy City (29-38) the lead for good.
Gallagher got the scoring started with a solo shot against Gateway starter Vince Molesky in the first. In the top of the second, Grant Buckner responded with a no-doubter to left field. Buckner's seventh homer of the season tied the game at 1-1.
The Grizzlies (24-43) took control early against the ThunderBolts' Jake Fisher (3-6). Ben Waldrip picked up his 45th RBI of the season on a sacrifice fly in the third. The run gave the Grizzlies a 2-1 lead.
Gateway then tacked on two more in the fourth. Tyler Tewell began the inning with a single and reached second on an error by Marquis Riley, which also allowed Richard Seigel to reach first base safely. Tewell came around to score on Cody Livesay's infield single. Gateway rookie Seth Heck then delivered a run-scoring base hit which plated Seigel.
Molesky gave two runs right back in the fourth. Cody Keefer drove in a run with a sacrifice fly while Jacob Tanis singled home another. The Grizzlies maintained a 4-3 lead until Gallagher's second home run in the sixth.
After RHP Tommy Nance dealt 1.1 scoreless innings out of Windy City's bullpen, the Grizzlies put runners on first and third with one out against ThunderBolts' closer Joel Lima as they trailed by one. Lima induced a 6-4-3 double play from Craig Massoni to end the ballgame.
Heck and Massoni paced Gateway's offense with two hits each.
The Grizzlies and ThunderBolts play the final game of their series on Thursday night at Standard Bank Stadium. LHP Dillon Haviland makes the start for Gateway against Windy City LHP Austin Wright. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. The game can be heard on the Grizzlies Radio Network, which airs on 101 ESPN's digital platforms and 1400 AM KJFF. Sam Levitt will call the action.
