Lake Erie Crushers News Release
AVON, Ohio- The Lake Erie Crushers were defeated by the Rockford Aviators, 4-3, in 11 innings as both teams held leads and lost them in a wild, back and forth game.
For the Crushers (28-37), the loss marks their fourth defeat in their last six games. The win for the Aviators (40-28), pushes their road record to 23-10 on the season.
In the third inning, the Aviators put the first runs on the board. Justin Fox led off and was walked by Crushers starter Brad Zambron. Anthony Renteria followed and hit his seventh home run of the season to right field.
Emmanuel Quiles led off the bottom of the third with a double to right. The next batter, Justin Cureton, then singled to move Quiles over to third. With one out, Chandler Brock hit a sacrifice fly to right that plated Quiles and cut the Rockford lead to one run.
Lake Erie then tied the game in the fifth inning. Boo Vazquez led off the inning with a triple to left field. He then scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Quiles.
In the seventh, the Crushers would take a lead that was short lived. Vazquez once again led off with a hit, this time a ground rule double to right center. Kyle Brueggemann was able to retire Quiles on a groundout to third. Roberto Padilla relieved the Aviators starter and then walked Cureton and struck out Trevor Stevens. Chandler Brock was then walked to load the bases and Jose Barraza was also put on for free, allowing Vazquez to walk home and give the Crushers a one run lead.
In the eighth inning, Justin Fox was given a free pass to start the inning. Fox then went to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on a groundout to second. With two outs, Raul Linares hit a grounder to third. Anderson Hidalgo picked it up but the throw took Barraza off the bag at first, allowing Fox to score the tying run. Rockford would strand runners on first and third as Dusty Robinson popped out to short.
The Crushers and Aviators would go to extra innings and the Aviators would push across the go ahead, and eventual winning, run in the 11th inning. Robinson was sent to second base to start the inning for Rockford. The Frontier League rule allows the player who made the final out of the previous inning to be awarded second base every inning following 10th inning. Robinson moved to third on a wild pitch thrown by Ladgie Zatyka (0-2) and scored on a ground rule double by Brian Bistagne.
The pitching on both sides was very good. Brueggemann went 6 1/3 innings for the Aviators allowing three runs on five hits while striking out eight. The Rockford bullpen did not allow a run the rest of the night. Matt Frahm (2-2) worked two scoreless innings, striking out two and picking up the win. Patrick Dolan (4) pitched the bottom of the 11th and earned the save. For the Crushers, Zambron went 4 2/3 innings allowing only two runs and four hits. Six Crushers came out of the bullpen and did not allow an earned run. An unearned run was charged to Trevor Longfellow and Zatyka, who went one inning, striking out two and picking up the loss.
The Crushers and the Aviators will wrap up this series up tomorrow at All Pro Freight Stadium. The Crushers will start right hander Hunter Adkins (3-5, 2.89) and the Aviators starting pitcher will be left hander Payton Baskette (1-3, 7.41). First pitch is scheduled to be thrown at 7:05 PM.
