Southern Illinois Miners News Release
Marion, Ill. (August 5, 2015) - The Southern Illinois Miners got another great start from Adam Lopez and scored three runs to break open a scoreless ballgame in the third en route to a series-evening road win over the Schaumburg Boomers on Wednesday night by a final score of 4-1 at Boomers Stadium.
Coming off a career-high 12 strikeouts in his previous start, Lopez (10-0) again shone brightly under the lights with six innings of one-run ball, allowing three hits and two walks with seven strikeouts to become the Frontier League's first 10-game winner this season. He had plenty of support as well from a Miners offense that struck for all 11 of their hits in the first six innings off of rookie Schaumburg hurler Taylor Thurber (1-2).
The Miners and Boomers were scoreless into the third inning when Southern Illinois took the reins of the game and never let go. Hunter King led off with an infield single before stealing second, then moving to third on Aaron Gates' bunt single. Frank Martinez then cranked a triple to right-center field to plate both baserunners for a 2-0 Miners lead before Niko Vasquez brought Martinez home with an infield hit that made the score 3-0.
With two outs in the fifth, the Miners added to their lead when Michael Earley hit a fly ball to center after Gates had led off the frame with another bunt single. The ball dropped for a hit, with the center fielder overrunning the ball allowing Earley to reach second base. He was thrown out at third trying to stretch it into a triple, but the damage was done.
Schaumburg plated a run on a wild pitch off Lopez in the sixth, and loaded the bases in the seventh with the tying run at first, but would get no closer as Joe Iorio, Evan Mott and Eric Green worked scoreless frames in the seventh, eighth and ninth to get the Miners the win. Green remained perfect in save opportunities with his sixth of the season for Southern Illinois.
The Miners now face the Boomers on Thursday in a rubber match at 6:30 p.m. looking to extend their franchise-record streak of 11 road series wins in a row as well as their overall seven-series win streak, with Jarett Miller going up against the Boomers' Eddie Cody.
The Southern Illinois Miners are the 2014 Frontier League East Division Champions and the 2012 Frontier League Champions. They have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception, and also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007, their inaugural season.
