CRESTWOOD, Ill. - The Gateway Grizzlies came up with only three hits in the opener of their series at Standard Bank Stadium on Tuesday night, as they fell 2-0 to the Windy City ThunderBolts.

In his first professional start, RHP Dakota Smith (1-1) allowed just two runs on four hits for Gateway (24-42). He held the ThunderBolts (28-38) scoreless through four innings until allowing a pair of runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

Windy City starter Travis Tingle (5-5) held the Grizzlies scoreless through six innings on the mound while allowing just two hits. The righty picked up his fifth win of the year.

With the game still scoreless in the fifth, Smith issued a one-out walk to Marquis Riley. He then hit Larry Balkwill with a pitch. After recording the second out of the frame, Smith then allowed an RBI single to Mike Torres. The base hit gave Windy City a 1-0 lead.

The ThunderBolts struck again in the sixth on Riley's run-scoring double. The hit was one of six against Grizzlies' pitching. After Smith exited, RHP Ross Spurgeon threw two scoreless innings in relief to keep the deficit at two runs.

The Grizzles were unable to muster much of anything against Windy City's bullpen. RHP Cam Giannini and LHP Pete Whittingslow combined to retire Gateway without allowing a hit. RHP Joel Lima allowed a hit but nothing more in the ninth inning to pick up his third save of the season.

Blake Brown, Craig Massoni, and Cody Livesay each picked up a hit for Gateway.

The Grizzlies and ThunderBolts play the middle game of their three-game series on Wednesday night. RHP Vince Molesky (3-4, 6.04 ERA) toes the rubber for the Grizzlies while Windy City counters with LHP Jake Fisher (6.05 ERA). First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. The game can be heard on the Grizzlies Radio Network, which airs on 101 ESPN's digital channels and 1400 AM KJFF.
