Grizzlies Drop Series Opener with Miners
June 23, 2012 - Frontier League (FL)
Gateway Grizzlies News Release
SAUGET, Ill. - The Miners of Southern Illinois issued the Grizzlies a sour welcome home Saturday night at GCS Ballpark, as the down-state foe slugged past Gateway 6-1 in front of 5,486.
Stunting the Gateway (16-18) bats was Miners (20-14) starter Shawn Gilblair (4-2) who tossed eight innings of two hit baseball while issuing four walks with four strikeouts. The Grizzlies notched only three total hits in the short two hour and 31 minute defeat, as the offense couldn't get started due to the Southern Illinois lefty's solid outing.
Opposite Gilblair was Gateway's horse Alex Kaminsky (5-2) who entered play with a Frontier League leading 5-1 record, but a six hit, six earned run showcase blackened his game's ledger and served him the eventual loss. The righty finished with two walks, five strikeouts, and gave up three homers through the fourth stanza that put the game out of reach early.
The lone bright spot in the 6-1 contest was out of the Gateway bullpen, as Gill Rehwinkel, Zac Treece, and Phillip Reamy each dialed up solid performances to help hold the margin. Treece put up three K's in his one and two thirds frames of labor while only allowing two hits to pace the Grizzlies relief efforts.
"We just have to be better," commented the slider tossing righty Treece. "Tomorrow night is a new night and we will put this behind us and do what we need to do. Win."
Grizzlies leadoff man Jonathan Johnson hit 1-for-4 to keep his seasons .309 average alive, while extending his 33-game on base streak.
The Grizzlies resume their series with the Miners Sunday night at GCS Ballpark. Right-hander Pat Arnold (2-0) makes the start for Gateway. First pitch is set for 6:05 CT.
