Normal CornBelters News Release
O'FALLON, Mo. - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Mid-Illini Credit Union, took an early lead and thwarted a late rally to defeat the River City Rascals 4-3 on Saturday night at T.R. Hughes Ballpark
The CornBelters manufactured a run in the first inning when Alvaro Ramirez was hit by a pitch, sacrificed to second, took third on a base hit and scored on a delayed steal. The Belters took advantage of more Rascals miscues to score three times in the second inning, thanks to two hits and two River City errors.
The Rascals scored twice in the third inning with some CornBelters help. Doug Sanders was hit by a pitch to lead off, and Gerardo Avila reached via error. Both scored on a double by Charlie Lisk and a sacrifice fly by Jeremy Synan respectively to cut the Normal lead to 4-2 after three innings.
River City cut the Belter lead to 4-3 in the seventh when Charlie Lisk reached on a fielder's choice and went to second on a throwing error, then scored on a base hit by Jason Patton.
Tyler Lavigne (3-1) took his second straight win with his second consecutive seven-inning performance. Rich Mascheri pitched the final two innings for his fifth save. Rascals starter Tony Marsala (2-2) took the loss.
The series continues in the St. Louis suburb on Sunday evening at 6:05 as left-hander Jacob Liedka (1-2, 4.30 ERA) takes the ball for the CornBelters against Rascals righty Keli'i Zablan (3-2, 2.64 ERA). Pre-game on WJBC.com begins at 5:50.
