JOLIET SLAMMERS (16-17) @ WINDY CITY THUNDERBOLTS (18-13)

Saturday, June 23 - 6:05 p.m. CT

Standard Bank Stadium - Crestwood, IL

Game #34 - Road Game #16 (16-17), (8-7)

RHP #13 Wander Alvino (1-1, 4.09 ERA) vs. RHP #8 Dustin Williams (4-2, 4.40 ERA)

Last time out...

The Joliet Slammers scored five times in the fifth inning to come from four runs back and defeat the Schaumburg Boomers by a final score of 5-4 Friday night at Silver Cross Field. The Boomers scored three times in the third inning off "Captain" Jake Renshaw. Mike Valadez doubled to start the inning and one out later Renshaw walked two straight batters to load the bases. He hit Frank Pfister to force in a run. A Steve McQuail two-RBI single followed to make the score 3-0. A Gerard Hall RBI double in the fourth gave Schaumburg a 4-0 lead. But the fifth inning was Boomers starter Tyler Watkins' undoing. Josh Lyon smacked a home run to start the frame. One out later Trey Manz drew a walk and Brad Netzel doubled. Jimmy Waters walked and Abel Nieves hit a sacrifice fly. Hector Pellot singled in a run to chase Watkins and Zach Mandelblatt delivered the go-ahead two-RBI single.

For Starters...

Wander Alvino is making his third start for the Slammers. He struggled in his last outing on June 17 against the Traverse City Beach Bums, going six innings and giving up five runs on six hits. Alvino walked four and struck out three as the Slammers lost by a score of 5-1. However his first start for Joliet was excellent as he went five shutout innings against Schaumburg in that outing. Alvino has six years of affiliated baseball experience in the Astros organization. He advanced as far as High Single-A and recorded a 4.19 ERA in the hitter-friendly California League in 2011. Alvino is 25 years of age and hails from the Dominican Republic.

Close games...

Six of the last nine games the Slammers have played have been decided by two runs or less. The Slammers are 4-2 in those six games. They are 0-3 in the other three contests. In their most recent series, the Slammers took two of three from the Schaumburg Boomers, all three of the games were decided by one run.

To open...

The Slammers are 5-7 in series openers so far in 2012.

Road Warriors...

The Slammers have actually been better away from Silver Cross Field this season, as they have a record of 8-7 on the road. However they are only 1-2 this year at Standard Bank Stadium.

Lis heating up...

Hitting Coach and Designated Hitter/1st Baseman Erik Lis got off to a slow start this season but recently he's started to tear the cover off the ball. Lis had hit safely in nine straight games and is hitting .412 over the past 10 games with a homer and six RBI. Overall on the season Lis has raised his average to .300 and has 3 HR and 15 RBI.

Mandelblatt up and down...

Zach Mandelblatt leads the Slammers in HR with 4 and RBI with 18. But he is last on the team in batting average as he's only hitting .200 on the season

Give me some relief!

In 43.2 IP in May, Joliet's bullpen had an era of 1.88. In 72.2 IP in June, they have a 5.94 ERA.

Error indicator...

The Slammers are 3-13 in games when they make an error. They are 13-4 in games when they do not.

Out-hit...

When the Slammers out-hit an opponent they are 13-4, but when the opponent out-hits the Slammers Joliet has a record of 2-13.

Transaction Wire...

The Slammers released LHP Mike Gaffigan today. They placed OF Areo Regoli on the Suspended List and signed LHP Dustin Quattrocchi.
