
Miners Top Grizzlies at Gateway

Sauget, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners received a great outing from LHP Shawn Gilblair as the Miners defeated the Gateway Grizzlies 6-1. Gilblair threw eight innings and gave up two hits. He allowed one run (earned), walked four and struck out three batters to earn his fourth win of the season.
The Miners struck first off Grizzlies starter Alex Kaminsky in the top of the second inning as Carlos Mendez hit a solo home run to give the Miners a 1-0 lead. With two outs and outfielder Josh Haley on first, Ken Gregory hit a two run home run to give the Miners a 3-0 lead.
The Miners stretched their lead in the top of the fourth inning as Carlos Mendez hit his second solo home run of the night to give the Miners a 4-0 lead. Newly signed outfielder Josh Haley hit a RBI groundout to bring in Will Block after he doubled to give the Miners a 5-0 lead.
The Miners scored another run in the top of the fifth inning as Chad Maddox hit a two out double to bring in Jake Kaase to give the Miners a 6-0 lead. The Grizzlies scored a run in the bottom of fifth as Jonathan Johnson hit a RBI single to bring the Grizzlies within five.
Miners reliever David Whigham made his debut has he pitched a scoreless ninth inning to solidify the win for the Miners 6-1.
The Miners improved to 20-14 with the win. The Grizzlies fall to 16-18 with the loss. The Miners will send LHP Darrin Tew (1-0, 3.18 ERA) to the mound against RHP Pat Arnold (2-0, 2.70 ERA). First pitch from GCS Ballpark is at 6:05 pm.
