Washington Wild Things News Release

WASHINGTON, Pa - Justin Hall pitched six innings of two-run ball for the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, en-route to a 3-2 win over the Lake Erie Crushers on Saturday night.

Hall gave up seven hits and walked four while striking out five in earning the win, improving his record to 2-3 on the year. The righty showed poise when it mattered most to keep the Wild Things offense within striking distance the entire night.

That Wild Things offense tallied just two hits through the first five innings against Lake Erie starter Trevor Longfellow, but broke through in the sixth.

The Crushers scored first in the second inning. Russ Moldenhauer led off the inning with a solo homerun. With the bases loaded, J.C. Figueroa drove in Jason Taylor to make it 2-0, Crushers. Hall then induced Adrian Ortiz to ground into an inning-ending double play to avoid further damage.

The Wild Things would stay persistent and fought back in the fourth.

Andrew Heck led off the inning with a walk and stole second. Will Arnold was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Two batters later, Coley Crank scored Heck from third on a hard come-backer to the mound to cut the deficit in half.

The Wild Things defense stood tall all night, turning two big double plays to thwart the Crushers. The first coming in the second after Lake Erie struck for two runs, and the second coming with the Crushers looking to extend their lead in the fifth. Hall gave up singles to Brian Erie and Robby Kuzdale, but managed to get Andrew Davis to ground into the Wild Things' second double play.

Hall worked himself out of another bases loaded jam in the six, striking out Brian Erie to end the inning, and effectively end his evening.

Washington kept hanging around and weathering blows, and eventually broke through in bottom half of the sixth.

After Robbie Garvey singled with one out and stole second, Arnold sent a pitch to right-center field. Center fielder Adrian Ortiz and right fielder Kuzdale failed to communicate on the play and neither fielder was able to make the catch, allowing Garvey to score from second and Arnold to advance all the way to third to tie things at two.

Rick Devereaux followed with a single to right to bring in Arnold and catapult the Wild Things into the lead at 3-2.

Nick Cicio came into the game in the seventh and slammed the door on the Crushers' lineup, providing a solid bridge to Steven Grife. Cicio worked a scoreless seventh and eighth innings, and fanned three batters.

Grife entered in the ninth for the save, throwing just eight pitches to earn the save and a rousing ovation from the 3,148 in attendance at CONSOL Energy Park.

The Wild Things will go for two in a row tomorrow night at CONSOL Energy Park. Eric Blackwell takes the mound for the Wild Things opposite Eric Gonzalez-Dial for Lake Erie. First pitch is set for 7:05, and Randy Gore has pregame coverage on your flagship station for Wild Things baseball on WJPA at 6:55. Tickets are still available at the CONSOL Energy Park box office, www.washingtonwildthings.com or by calling 1-866-WILD.
