Rascals' Comeback Falls Short

River City Rascals News Release

O'Fallon, Mo. - It almost happened again. With River City down a run entering the ninth, a leadoff walk started the frame and a two-out single put runners at the corners, but Curran Redal grounded out to first to end the threat and the Rascals' bid for a fourth-straight walk-off win fell short with the Normal CornBelters hanging on to a 4-3 win that dropped River City back to second place.

Normal (13-19) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first two innings, scoring in the first on a double steal with runners at the corners. River City, who loaded the bases with one out in the first but failed to score, helped the CornBelter cause in the second inning, committing two throwing errors that led to three runs, two unearned, which would end up being the difference in the game.

Rascal starter Tony Marsala (2-2) never did settle in, but pitched into and out of trouble through 6 1/3 innings while River City pecked away at the deficit. The home team scored twice in the third after Doug Sanders was hit in the head with a pitch (he immediately sprinted to first) and Gerardo Avila reached on an error. Lisk followed with an RBI double and Jeremy Synan drove one to left for a sacrifice fly to make the score 4-2.

The Rascals (20-14) scratched across a run in the seventh to close within a run, 4-3, on a single from Jason Patton that scored Lisk but two were left on base. Brandon Cunniff pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth inning after Alex Sunderland got out of a seventh inning jam to preserve the one-run deficit.

Both teams continue the three game series tomorrow night with first pitch set for 6:05. Normal sends lefty Jacob Liedka (1-2, 4.30) to the mound against the Rascals' Keli'i Zablan (3-2, 2.64).
