Grizzlies Drop 2-1 Decision to Manitoba

November 5, 2004 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Utah Grizzlies News Release

Winnipeg, Manitoba- The Utah Grizzlies dropped their seventh straight game on Thursday night as they played a scoreless game until near midway through the third period before the Manitoba Moose were able to find a way through the wall that was David LeNeveu eventually posting a 2-1 victory. The Moose posted 45 shots on goal including 20 in the second period winning their third straight game.

Utah and Manitoba each played a spirited first 20 minutes with each team mustering double-digit shots on goal (12-11 in favor of Manitoba) and each club squandering a pair of power play opportunities. With neither team scoring a goal, the Grizzlies did not give up a goal in the first period for the first time in six games, since October 13.

In the second period, the Moose turned up the heat firing 20 shots on goal against LeNeveu, the most shots in one period this year by a Grizzlies opponent. The second year goaltender for the Grizzlies though kept the Moose at bay thwarting two power play chances and making 20 saves. Utah could only manager five shots but remained even with no score between the two clubs.

Manitoba would finally break the ice on the 39th shot of the game when a neutral zone turnover allowed Nolan Baumgartner to push a puck to rookie Alexandre Burrows who did something the Moose could not do all night, beat LeNeveu. For Burrows, it was his first professional goal. Manitoba would get a power play chances just minutes later and convert as Kirill Koltsov scored his second goal of the season assisted by Josh Green and Baumgartner.

With 1:30 remaining, Utah would pull goaltender LeNeveu and for the first time this year with the extra skater push one across the goalline as Kiel McLeod scored his second goal of the season assisted by Jason Jaspers and Erik Westrum. Utah would continue to put pressure on with the extra skater in the final minute but couldn't beat Auld again as they fell by one goal.

The Moose outshot the Grizzlies 45-29 in the game and went 1 for 5 on the power play as they win their fourth game in a row.

The Grizzlies face Manitoba again on Saturday night in the final game in the Winnipeg Arena. Face-off is scheduled for 6:30 PM (MT).
