
Grizzlies' comeback falls short

The Grizzlies trailed 6-4 heading into the bottom of the ninth inning. Gary Gilbert, in his first and only at-bat of the night, led off with his third home run of the season. The shot blasted off the top of the back wall in right field. The Grizzlies brough the winnig run to the plate, but fell short, losing 6-5 to Rockford in front of 5,333 at GMC Stadium. The loss drops the Grizzlies to 16-13. Rockford improves to 17-12.
The Grizzlies opened the scoring when Wayne Astrauskas homered for the second time in as many nights to make it 1-0. Ryan Sullivan made it 3-0 with a two-run double in the fourth. Greg stevens extended the lead to four with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning. Rockford scored a pair in each of the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.
Sullivan was 1-4 with the two RBIs. Todd Oetting led the way, going 3-3 with a double, two singles a walk and a run scored. Jimmy Reiter was 2-4 with a run scored.
Gilbert, a rookie from Southeast Missouri State, has now appeared in five games for the Grizzlies and is hitting .500 (7-14) with three home runs and seven RBIs.
Kyle Zaleski suffered his first loss in relief. He went 1 2/3 allowing two runs on four hits, he walked one and struck out two. Kevin Lee started and went 5 1/3 innings allowing four runs.
The Grizzlies and RiverHawks will play the rubber match Sunday evening with a 6:05 game at GMC Stadium.
