Gateway Grizzlies News Release

JOLIET, IL - Gateway left the game-tying run on third base to end the game, losing 7-6 and falling short in a comeback attempt against the Joliet Slammers Tuesday night at Silver Cross Field. The loss was the second in a row for the Grizzlies and it moved their record to 0-4 against the Slammers this season.

Trailing 7-6 into the ninth inning, Tyler Heil led off with a double for Gateway and Brian Harris followed with a bunt single. Joliet then recorded two outs on one play as Kent Gerst lined out to second and Harris was doubled off the first base bag. With Heil still on third, DJ Fitzgerald struck out to end the game.

Gateway (30-42) got on the board first in game one of the series. Joe Agreste drove in a run on a double and Brandon Peters also notched an RBI with a single in the first inning.

Joliet (42-30) tied the game at two in third, getting consecutive RBI doubles from Erik Lis and Kyle Maunus.

Joliet continued their scoring with three in the fourth and two in the fifth, while Gateway managed just one run during that span to make the score 7-3.

Landon Hernandez helped the Grizzlies draw closer with a three-run homer in the sixth, his 12th of the season.

Sean Toler (0-3) got the start for Gateway and surrendered four earned runs on seven hits in four innings. Nolan Shaffer made his Gateway debut in relief, going four strong innings and giving up just two runs.

Heil paced the Grizzlies with two doubles, while Peters reached base all four times.

The Grizzlies resume their series with the Joliet Slammers on Wednesday night. St. Louis native Brad Stone (0-6) will get the start for Gateway. First pitch is set for 7:05 CT at Silver Cross Field.
