Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
NORMAL, IL-The Traverse City Beach Bums got a tenth-inning RBI-single from third baseman Jeff Flagg to break a 5-5 tie and beat the Normal Cornbelters in front of 2,557 fans at The Corn Crib by a score of 6-5.
The win for the Beach Bums was just the fifth game the Beach Bums have played in extra innings this season. Traverse City is now 3-2 in games they've played in extra frames.
Normal jumped out to a 2-0 lead with single runs in the first and second innings. An RBI-groundout from first baseman Steven Alexander and an RBI-single from designated hitter Mark Samuelson gave the Cornbelters a 2-0 lead.
The Beach Bums took their first lead in the series with a five-run fourth inning. The scoring opened when shortstop Jose Vargas ended a 10-pitch at-bat with a two-run home run in to the corn fields in right-center field beyond the outfield wall, his ninth of the season to tie the game at two. The Beach Bums went on to score three more times thanks in-part to an RBI-double from designated hitter Greg Burns and a sacrifice fly from second baseman Tom Zebroski to give Traverse City a 5-2 lead.
The Cornbelters used a two-run home run from shortstop Frank Martinez in the fifth inning to bring the score to 5-4 in favor of the Beach Bums. Normal tied the score against Traverse City reliever Scott Mueller in the eighth when center fielder Alvaro Ramirez reached on an infield single to even the score at five.
The score would stay the same until the tenth inning, when right fielder reached base with an infield single to start the frame. After stealing second and third base, Flagg delivered the go-ahead base hit, scoring Brown and giving Traverse City a 6-5 lead. Mueller stayed in the ballgame and finished off the Beach Bums victory.
Mueller (2-1) earned his second win of the season after pitching 2.2 scoreless innings while striking out three. Normal reliever Jacob Liedka (2-3) suffered his third loss of the season in an inning of work in which he gave up the run-scoring hit to Flagg.
With the win, the Beach Bums record improves to 39-35, while Normal falls to 35-39 on the season. Flagg and Brown each had two hits to lead the Beach Bums offense in the contest.
The Beach Bums-Cornbelters series concludes with game three of this three-game series Thursday night at 8:00 p.m. Left hander Bryan Banes starts for the Beach Bums against Normal righty Matt Mossey. The Budweiser Pregame Show starts at 7:40 p.m. on Sunny Country 101.9 FM and streaming online through tcbeachbums.com.
