Rockford RiverHawks News Release
MARION, Ill. - Four Southern Illinois pitchers combined on a four-hitter on Wednesday as the Miners shut out the Rockford RiverHawks, 3-0, at Rent One Park.
Starter Joe Augustine and his successors dodged four Rockford scoring opportunities, including a leadoff triple by Freddy Parejo in the first inning and a first-and-third, nobody out chance in the second inning. Parejo was wiped out on a fielder's choice at home plate, and in the second inning, Augustine retired three in a row to escape the jam created by a leadoff walk of Jason James and a hit-and-run single by Matt Greener. Rockford left six on base, but didn't reach scoring position after the sixth inning.
Augustine (3-1) scattered three hits over five innings for the win. Clayton Dill, the last of three relievers, retired the side in order in the ninth inning for his fifth save.
The Miners scored three two-out runs off the Rockford duo of Chris Nyman and Corey Frerichs. Nyman (1-2) limited the Miners to four hits over seven innings and struck out five, but walked a season-high six. In the second inning, Nyman walked Sean Harrell, who scored on Boomer Blanchard's triple. In the fifth inning, Nyman retired the first two batters, but Eric Suttle reached on a bunt single, Will Block walked and Suttle scored from second base on Gordie Gronkowski's single to the hole at shortstop. The Miners added an unearned run off Frerichs in the eighth.
The series finale is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Thursday and will be aired live on ESPN 1380.
The RiverHawks' next home game is 7:05 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16, against Windy City. Petco sponsors Dog Days of Summer, when fans are invited to bring their canine companion to the park. Thompsons' Transmissions sponsors Kids Eat Free Tuesdays.
