Slammers Edge Grizzlies For Second Straight Night

JOLIET, IL - Gateway stranded the game-tying run on base in the ninth inning for the second straight night, falling 7-5 to the Joliet Slammers on Wednesday night at Silver Cross Field. The loss was the third in a row for the Grizzlies as they move to 0-5 against the Slammers on the season.

Trailing 7-5 into the ninth, Case Rigby doubled with one out and Landon Hernandez drew a pinch-hit two out walk to get the game-tying run on base. Pinch-hitter Johnny Aldaz followed with a strikeout to end the game.

Gateway (30-43) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Joe Agreste doubled with two outs and Charlie Lisk followed with a two-run homer to left field. It was the 17th homer of the season for Lisk.

Joliet (43-30) wasted no time jumping on Gateway starting pitcher Brad Stone. Sean Estand highlighted a four-run first for Joliet with a three-run double.

Kent Gerst drove in a run on a single in the second and Tyler Heil notched an RBI single in the fourth to tie the game at four.

Joliet scored two runs on two hits and two walks in the fifth to regain the lead. Hector Pellot had a sacrifice fly while Reid Chenworth notched an RBI walk.

Gateway got an RBI single by Gerst in the sixth and Joliet tacked on an insurance run with a Ben Hewett RBI knock in the eighth.

Gerst, Heil, Agreste and Lisk all had two hits for the Grizzlies, while Rigby led the way with three hits.

Stone (0-7) suffered the loss for Gateway, giving up six runs on six hits in six innings.

The Grizzlies conclude their series with the Joliet Slammers on Thursday night. Rookie left-hander Andres Caceres Jr. (1-1) will get the start for Gateway. First pitch is set for 7:05 CT at Silver Cross Field.
