Grizzlies can't hold off Wolf Pack

WEST VALLEY CITY, UT - Utah came out strong on Monday night and played a solid first period but eventually tailed off as the Hartford Wolf Pack captured a 3-2 overtime victory. The Grizzlies held two separate one-goal leads but couldn't hold on and had to settle for a point.

The Grizzlies continued their strong first period play as of late scoring the only goal of the frame when Kiel McLeod snapped a wrist shot by the league's top goaltender Steve Valiquette for his ninth goal of the season assisted by Martin Sonnenberg at the 14:31 mark of the period. Utah has outscored their opponents 5-1 in the first period of their last four games. In the frame, Utah outshot the Wolf Pack 9-7 as David LeNeveu made seven saves and Valiquette made eight saves.

Hartford came back in the second period with a power play goal by Dominic Moore, his 15th of the season, assisted by Ken Gernander and Jed Ortmeyer at 3:51 of the period tying the game at one goal apiece. Utah answered the bell at the 11:16 mark with Erik Westrum scoring his third goal in his last four games and his team-leading 13th of the season assisted by Aaron Gavey regaining the lead at 2-1. Hartford outshot the Grizzlies 14-8 in the period as LeNeveu made 13 saves.

The Wolf Pack showed that hard work pays off in the third period as they tied the game with Ryan Hollweg driving the net and directing a shot past LeNeveu for his 7th goal of the season. Jamie Lundmark and Ortmeyer drew the assists in the game tying goal.

The game eventually went to overtime where Dana Lattery was called for a high stick that gave the Wolf Pack their sixth power play of the night and sniper Jeff Hamilton found the net with the man advantage for his 18th goal of the season and his eighth game-winning goal.

Hartford outshot the Grizzlies 33-26 in the game and went 2 for 6 on the power play. David LeNeveu made 30 saves and Steve Valiquette made 24 saves gaining the victory.

Utah and Hartford will play again on Wednesday night with face-off scheduled for 7:05 PM.
