West Valley City, Utah - The Utah Grizzlies (27-25-6-10) built a 3-0 first period lead and held on defeating the Phoenix RoadRunners 4-2 Tuesday night at the E-Center.
The first goal came at 7:35 and was scored by Rob Hennigar, his 14th of the season, on a smooth drop pass by Tim Verbeek. Utah then took over in the final minute of the first to extend their lead to 3-0. The second Utah goal was scored by Mike Walsh (13) at 19:17 and just 11 seconds later Tom May (31) made it 3-0.
The Grizzlies outshot the RoadRunners 17-9 in the first period. At the intermission Mike Walsh said, "We kept putting shots on him (Chris Beckford-Tseu) and he was good until the end of the period."
At 6:55 of the second period, Phoenix added their first goal to make it 3-1.
The RoadRunners made it 3-2 at 6:54 of the third period to give them a chance to tie it up before the end of regulation. However, following a several Phoenix chances and Mike Mole saves, Tim Verbeek gave the Grizzlies some relief with an empty-net goal to make it 4-2 as Utah pressured Phoenix in their own end.
Both Tim Verbeek and Rob Hennigar added two assists in the game to go along with one goal each. Utah goaltender Mike Mole started his first game back after being assigned from Bridgeport Monday. He stopped 26 of 28 leading Utah to the win.
After the game Utah Head Coach Kevin Colley said, "The way they came out in the first period was exactly our game plan; they came out and played hard."
The Grizzlies and RoadRunners continue their two-game series Wednesday at the E-Center. Face-off is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
