Charlotte Checkers News Release

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The thousands in attendance during Sunday's Checkers game against the Florida Everblades greeted Ellie Potvin, the seven year old girl battling a rare form of cancer, and her family with a thunderous and emotionally charged standing ovation followed by numerous donations to help her continual medical expenses.

Ellie Shoal Potvin was diagnosed with a childhood cancer Rhabdomyosarcoma. She is in stage 4 of this disease. The Charlotte Checkers teamed up with Ellie and her family to raise funds to help ease the financial burdens placed on Ellie's family and allow her parents to provide the best medical treatments available in the world. The donations on the night came from various sources including ticket sales, cash donations and a stick and jersey auction. The total raised during the evening came to approximately $9,600.

Prior to the game, Ellie and her family were met on the ice by Checkers players, team owner Michael Kahn and team COO Tera Black. The team played a video tribute to Ellie's heroic battle and gave her numerous gifts from the team. After the culmination of the contest, Ellie was named as the game's first star as the entire Checkers team surrounded her on the ice while fans stood in jubilation despite the shootout loss to Florida.

The Checkers are in their 16th season of play as a member of the ECHL. The next Checkers home game will take place on March 26 against the Gwinnett Gladiators at 7 p.m. In the team's 15-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 11 times including four consecutive playoff appearances to date.
