Phoenix RoadRunners News Release
WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah - Rob Hennigar and Tim Verbeek each had a goal and two assists and the Utah Grizzlies doubled up the Phoenix RoadRunners 4-2 before 3,081 at the "E"-Center in ECHL action Tuesday.
Utah (27-25-16) jumped out of the gates quickly opening up a 3-0 first period lead and chasing RoadRunners' goalie Chris Beckford-Tseu from the game. Hennigar started the scoring at 7:35 when he received a pass in the slot from Verbeek and slid the puck through the pads of Beckford-Tseu and into the back of the cage for a 1-0 lead. The Grizzlies then scored twice in a span of 11 seconds in the period's final minute. Off a RoadRunners' turnover, Hennigar fed a driving Mike Walsh who jammed a shot through Beckford-Tseu and in at 19:16. Then off the ensuing face-off, Tom May netted his 31st goal of the season beating Beckford-Tseu over the left shoulder from the top of the right-wing circle at 19:27 to cap the first period scoring.
The RoadRunners (28-33-5) cut the deficit to two goals midway through the second period when Gino Guyer capitalized off a Utah turnover and beat Grizzlies' goalie Mike Mole along the ice at 6:55 making the score 3-1.
Phoenix made it interesting at 6:54 of the third period when John McNabb slapped a shot over Mole's right shoulder off the crossbar and into the net to pull within 3-2, but the RoadRunners could not muster the equalizer. Verbeek finished the scoring with an empty-net goal at 19:26
Utah out-shot Phoenix 44-28. Beckford-Tseu stopped 14 shots in just one period and suffered the loss to fall to 2-6-2 on the season. The RoadRunners went 0-4 on the power play while Utah was 0-6 with the man-advantage.
Notes: With the loss, Phoenix fell nine points behind fourth place Utah in the West Division. A Grizzlies win in regulation tomorrow would clinch a playoff spot for Utah and eliminate the RoadRunners from contention in the West Division playoffs.
