Grizz Down Griffins

December 7, 2002 - ECHL (ECHL)
Utah Grizzlies News Release

Grand Rapids, Michigan - It was not the prettiest game for the Grizzlies but effective it was as Utah improved to 4-2 on their current road trip with a 3-2 victory over Grand Rapids.

The Griffins started the scoring midway through the first period when Tomas Kopecky one-timed a shot past Jason Bacashihua. Utah would come back late in the period when Eric Landry scored his team leading 10th goal of the season from Jon Sim and Matthieu Descoteaux tying the score at one goal apiece after one period.

Utah scored the only goal in the second period when Greg Hawgood pinched in taking a pass from David Gosselin and beat Grand Rapids goaltender Joey MacDonald giving the Grizzlies their first lead of the night.

The Griffins would fall behind by two goals when Jeff Bateman showed persistence poking at several chances along with David Gosselin at the doorstep with Bateman finally beating MacDonald for his second goal of the season. The Griffins scored a late power play goal off the stick of Andrew Luciuk who was playing in his first game for Grand Rapids after being called up earlier in the day from Muskegon.

Bacashihua stopped 31 shots in his return to his home state of Michigan, while MacDonald faced only 18 shots stopping 15 of them.

Three Stars: 1. Jason Bacashihua (Grizzlies) 31 saves 2. David Gosselin (Grizzlies) 2 assists 3. Tomas Kopecky 1goal (Griffins)

Next Game: The Grizzlies return home for the first time since November 20th when they host the San Antonio Rampage on December 11th.
